About
What is Kings Norton Farmers Market?
- A market with over twenty five producers, most from within 40 miles of Birmingham
- A place where you can buy healthy, fresh food direct from the people who make it
- A locally run market where you can meet your neighbours
What are the benefits?
- Look after yourself. Fresh food is better for you. We have vegetables, fruit, fresh meat, fish and organic produce
-
Look after your neighbourhood. Support your local farmers and producers, and help to keep The Green thriving
- Look after the Earth. Help the environment by eating food that hasn’t travelled halfway across the world
Our organisation
Kings Norton Farmers Market was set up by a group of local residents who wanted to make a difference to our community. We are a not for profit organisation - we charge traders for stalls, but most of this money is used to pay for the various licences, insurance and publicity that we need to operate. Any surplus is tied into the benefit of the Community through our status as a Community Interest Company.
Setting up the first ever Kings Norton Farmers Market was a suprisingly difficult process, but we had great support from David from the Moseley Farmers Market. Moseley have done a brilliant job, and have gone from a few stalls to being a regular and incredibly popular event - we can only hope to copy them!
Kings Norton Farmers Market is not part of Birmingham City Council, but we would like to express our thanks to the many Council officers who have helped us to get to this stage.
If you would like to volunteer to help us, either on the day, or by publicising our market, please let us know by emailing Duncan.
Market Rules 2008-9
A. All produce sold must be grown, reared, pickled, baked, smoked, or processed by the stallholder.
B. Primary Produce: this will have been grown or reared on the producer’s land, for livestock and plants this means grown or reared (having spent at least 50% of its life) on the producer’s land.
C. Secondary Produce: anyone processing produce or adding value is a secondary producer. All processed goods must contain at least 10% of raw ingredient originating from within the defined local area (not merely bought locally). No bought-in produce may be sold without further processing.
D. All organic food producers must display organic certification from a recognised UK organic certification body.
E. No genetically modified (GM) produce, nor goods containing GM ingredients may be sold.
F. No overseas produce may be sold.
G. Local area: Kings Norton Farmers’ Market defines the local area as a 50-mile radius from the Market. The majority of producers will be drawn from within this area. The larger than usual distance is due to the location of the market at the South West of Birmingham City - this allows access to the market from farmers on the other side of the city.
H. Maximum distance: the maximum distance from which producers may travel to the market is 100 miles. This is only applicable where similar products are unavailable from more local producers, and is only acceptable in exceptional cases.
I. When space becomes available at the market preference will be given to local producers, providing that quality is not compromised.
J. Stalls must be staffed by someone who is directly involved in growing, raising or producing the goods on sale.
K. All stallholders must comply with all current Trading Standards and Environmental Health requirements.
L. Producers must maintain their own employee, public and products liability insurance.
M. Each producer will fill in an application form each year, and be deemed to satisfy the Farmers’ Market Rules.
