Fish at the Market
Sunday, March 8th, 2009If you are a regular shopper at our market you will have noticed that we had a stall selling sea-fish at our recent markets. How do sea-fish fit in with Farmers’ Markets? Not very well would be the simplest answer. In fact, FARMA rules make it very unlikely that sea-fish (or any fish) could be sold at a Farmers’ Market.
We don’t think that this is a very satisfactory answer - fish is, and always has been, a significant part of the UK’s diet; and the UK fishing industry is no less deserving of support than local farmers are.
What we want to do is to change our rules to ensure that we can offer you fish. If a local fish supplier becomes available, then we will give them preference. If we can’t find a local fish supplier then we will ask our local fishmonger to source fish that have been landed at British ports - ensuring that the fish comes from the UK fishing fleet.
But, above all, we want your input. Let us know if we’re taking the right approach!
